Torrent Basics

Welcome to the Torrent Basics guide! This section will help you understand torrents, how they work, and how to use them efficiently and safely.

🔹 What Are Torrents?

Torrents are a form of peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing that allows users to distribute and download files without relying on a central server. Instead of downloading from a single source, you download small pieces from multiple users.

Key Terms:

  • Seeders 🌱 – Users who have the full file and are uploading it.
  • Leechers 🧲 – Users who are downloading the file.
  • Peers 🤝 – Any user connected to the torrent network.
  • Trackers 📡 – Servers that help peers find each other.
  • Magnet Links 🔗 – Direct links that allow instant torrent downloads.

How to Download Torrents

  1. Choose a Torrent Client
    • Popular options: qBittorrent, Deluge, Transmission.
  2. Find a Trusted Torrent File
    • Use well-known sites with active seeders.
  3. Open the Torrent in Your Client
    • Either open a .torrent file or use a magnet link.
  4. Check File Quality
    • Look for video/audio format, codec, and resolution.
  5. Seed After Downloading
    • Keep sharing after you finish downloading (1:1 ratio recommended).

Staying Safe While Torrenting

  • Use a VPN – Hides your IP from trackers and ISPs.
  • Avoid Fake Torrents – Stick to trusted sources and check comments.
  • Enable Encryption – Protects your data from ISP throttling.
  • Use Blocklists – Prevents connections to suspicious IPs.

🔹 CSF (Clean Steam Files): Ensures pirated game files remain unmodified.
🔹 Hash Verification: Check SHA-256 hash to confirm file integrity.
